The Newsroom
This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on WordPress

Similar to yesterday, this sounds like a hard news report what is important, get the facts, report and talk intelligently, coming from the women leading the meeting. Versus young Millennial’s who just got out of college 5-10 years ago who get most of their news, if you want to call it that from MSNBC, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. And watch a hell of a lot of tabloid and celebrity news and realty TV and follow those things online. And what they are saying is that, “we should report and cover what will draw the most ratings”. Meaning what they are interested in. And when it comes to political news, get the most outrageous and tabloid looking news stories possible from the loudest voices.

This sounded to me at least like a debate between 60 Minutes or Frontline, versus Hard Copy or Access Hollywood, or whatever the so-called hot tabloid news show is today. Sounds like the hard news people are in charge and the tabloid folks either have to go on the ride or get off the bus. Apparently this so-called news show started off as tabloid and technology oriented and moved to hard news, because their news anchor was falling asleep at the wheel and they got a real news producer. Meaning a producer who produces real news. Hard news that is important for the country know, including politics.

Cable News
This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on WordPress

That whole scene sounded like two hard news veterans like Peter Jennings, for all you kids out there, he anchored ABC’s World News before he died ten-years ago, or Tom Brokaw, former anchor of NBC’s Nightly News, versus some young guy or dude, however you want to put it, who graduated college lets say five-years ago who is perfectly qualified and talented to be doing tabloid news or TV writing or producing or something, like working at Hard Copy or something, if that show is still on there. But doesn’t want to be seen as purely a tabloid worker and wants something serious and substantial on his resume or something.

So the young kid, who should be working full-time in tabloid news, or as writer or producer in Hollywood, gets a break at a real hard news cable news show with his tabloid background and has this idea that he can do both at the same time. You know, good luck with that when you’re working for two people, the anchor and executive producer who are only interested in hard news. And could care less about Casey Anthony, Kim Kardashian, or Paris Hilton, or the latest stupid comments that Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann gave. That would be tabloid political stories in Sarah’s and Michelle’s cases.

The numbers guy, is about exactly that. How the show is doing and who is watching it and how to bring in more people. What stories and topics will bring in the most ratings. And generally speaking since we live in a country of young assholes who see tabloid news as crucially important and don’t think they can live without it and freak out when they miss anything about their favorite celebrities, that is what we get a lot of. The news people male or female, are interested in, well news, in case you were wondering and want ratings too so they can stay on air. But want to cover stories and do them well and appeal to a lot of intelligent viewers, that actually give a damn about important news in this country that actually personally and financially affects them.

So that is what you see in this scene. Two news people, versus the numbers guy, the guy who is simply in drawing the most ratings possible. Versus the news people who simply want to produce the best news show possible that is profitable and allows for them to do the best show that they can. But aren’t simply about the ratings and the money, because they are journalists first. And I just wish we had more real news people on cable right now, because we need more real news. The people who are simply into the tabloid stories will always have those sources to find what they are looking for anyway.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m in favor of what I call and others on the center-left call common sense gun control. And no that doesn’t mean gun prohibition and outlawing the second amendment. It means prohibiting stupid and crazy people and criminals who might be both, or even highly intelligent from owning or possessing firearms in America. And I’m not talking about preventing your average serial jaywalker from having a gun. Or even above average or below average serial jaywalker. For example since I qualify as a serial jaywalker and damn proud of my illegal walking across the streets, I wouldn’t be banned under common sense gun control from owning or possessing a firearm. As long as I don’t go stupid or nuts or become a real criminal that actually hurts innocent people. Which is who I’m talking about.

But gun control is like putting out a burning house with a baby’s spit, to try to solve a much larger problem and to put it simply. And if that is still not simple enough for you, you might be on my list of people who shouldn’t own or possess firearms in America. We need to go much further than that and if you are seriously interested in passing a constitutional amendment and are concern about gun violence, I might have an idea for you. How about we pass a constitutional amendment that prohibits idiots and mental patients from owning or possessing firearms in America. We’ll call it the mentally handicapped violence prevention amendment, or HVPA for all of you acronym junkies. Who obviously have way too much free time, or you wouldn’t be an acronym junkie.

I know what you are thinking, the politically correct crazy Left (MSNBC) would go nuts over this, because for one their gun rights would be taken away. But they would have a problem with Americans being denied rights simply for being stupid or crazy and claim discrimination towards stupid and crazy people. And perhaps invent new terms like nutism, which would be like racism for crazy people. And perhaps idiotism, which would be like racism for, well for idiots, if you’re keeping score at home. And if you are, similar to the acronym junkie, get a life.

I’m not trying to make fun of a very serious subject here. Strike that, of course I am, but hopefully doing it in a way that makes a serious solid point. Which is as long as we have stupid and crazy people with access to firearms in America, legal or illegal they’ll find ways to get guns and then take out their frustrations on people that they see as threats, who are completely innocent. If you don’t believe me and perhaps see me as a reporter for The Onion or something, (I wish) just look at the mental condition’s of our shooters the last what four years now and the people they’ve hurt or killed as a result.

This is my first satire about voter id and that is because this is a very serious issue. Because we are literally talking about perhaps the most anti-democratic pieces of legislation that America has ever seen at least going back to the 1960s and 70s. It is not a solution looking for a problem, it is bad policy without a problem to fix at all. To put it frankly, it is about preventing loyal Democrats from voting. People who wouldn’t need id’s for anything, like senior citizens and college students, at least not state-issued id’s.

Neoconservatives, because that is exactly what they are and I’m with the Jeff Daniels character on this one, when they won back a bunch of state legislatures and governorships in 2010, especially in big traditional Democratic states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, discovered they enjoyed power. Actually they love power, they loved power as much as Jim Morrison loved alcohol or John Candy loved food. And also discovered that if they put their policies and laws through, people in those states, especially big Democratic states would vote them out and they would be out of power, the thing they love.

So how do you hold onto power without winning reelection? You stop the opposition from voting, you after their traditional base and make it difficult for them to vote. A better term for voter id would be the Democratic Voter Prevention Act or DVPA and then name the state that currently has a Tea Party government instead of Republican government. To be a Republican, I think you actually have to believe in republicanism. That makes sense to me at least. “I know how we’ll win and get reelected! We’ll stop the other sides’ core base from voting! Gee that’s the ticket!” Unfortunately for them, this is unconstitutional and has been thrown out in states like Pennsylvania.

I swear that and I probably believed this when, but in early 2011 when House Republicans just took control of the House of Representatives, that their so-called Tea Party Caucus didn’t know a damn thing about economics. At least fiscal policy, like the national debt and deficit. There’s a good reason why America has never defaulted on our debt and never needed to the International Monetary Fund to manage our government’s financial books. We’ve always had a Democratic Party and Republican Party at least at the leadership level that was smart enough never to risk that.

We don’t know if defaulting on our debt would’ve crashed the economy. But why do we know that, because we’ve never risked that before. The 2010 ten mid-term elections completely changed that. In comes the Tea Party Republicans who the only thing they know about economics is what anarcho-libertarians have told them. Who’ve never run anything at least as it relates to government. Who get these wild ideas that lifting the debt ceiling only means you approve of the national debt and don’t see it as a problem. And are giving Congress and the administration now and into the future permission to borrow and spend more.

The fact all that raising the debt ceiling does is pay the current bills. Our current interest on the debt and allows for the U.S. Government to buy time to pay down its debt with future deficit reduction agreements and economic growth. It is like making it official with a bank what you owe on the loan. So both sides know where they stand. The individual or group knows how much the owe and the bank knows how much they are entitled to. It doesn’t give them permission to add to their debt and put more money on the credit card. The Tea Party still doesn’t get that by in large.

Tabloids
Source: This piece was originally posted at The New Democrat Plus

The guy, lets call him Bob, because I’m too lazy or not interested enough to look up his real name, made a good point at the end of this video about the agent who works for people who get caught up in these tabloid stories. Either simply as victims of suspects of whatever the crime might have been. George Zimmerman would be the obvious example of a suspect put on trial for the killing of Travon Martin. And the way, again Bob talked about this agent that looks for “OMG stories” and people caught up in them and how to make money off of the stories.

Because seriously that is what these stories are about. What is awesome, what is hot will make people go or think oh my God about and get them to watch their program or network and read their publication about. That is just the culture and society that we’ve become, or have been for a very long time with the internet and now throw in the social network age has just made obvious to everyone. It is not what is important and what people need to know that is important to cable networks, meaning so-called news networks. But what is hot, what is awesome, what grabs people’s attention and drives them to their shows.

This might sound like an extreme example, but I could a time when, let’s CNN who at least prided themselves at one point for their hard news coverage, but I could see them with an issue involving what to cover at this exact moment with two competing breaking stories in their laps. “Should we cover America’s invasion of Syria to oust the Assad Regime that just murdered thousands of Syrian citizens in Damascus? Or should we cover Paris Hilton being arrested and arraigned for shoplifting?” Again this might sound extreme, but anyone old enough to remember the wall-to-wall CNN coverage of the O.J. Simpson case in the mid-1990s.

Cable news doesn’t mean hard news, meaning important news. Cable news is not another term for 60 Minutes or Frontline. It just means, “this is what is going on right now that we think you are interested in and why you should watch it and boost our ratings, because we’ll give you the best coverage of what you’re interested in”. Cable news is now combined with tabloid news into one entity. And they go where they believe is the most popular story at the time to drive up their ratings.

What the Maggie character from The Newsroom didn’t mention and perhaps didn’t think of, is that perhaps Representative Michelle Bachmann’s whose career in Congress will be over in just a few weeks, (counting the days, can’t wait) that perhaps Michelle believes her own propaganda. See I’m not sure if the distinguished Representative from Minnesota is an escaped mental patient, someone who should be committed, but because she’s married to Markus Bachmann who perhaps should be committed as well, or is not smart enough to see that her dear wife needs professional help. Or is a complete idiot who believes her own, lets say propaganda about “God wants me to run for President”.

You know not all politician’s are liars. Which is as difficult to believe that it never snows in Minnesota, or the New York Yankees aren’t from New York, or there isn’t a lot of oil in Texas. But there are politician’s that are simply flat nuts or complete morons, or perhaps in Michelle Bachmann’s case a case of both. And yes there are politician’s that lie, well their mouths off, who the only way to know what they think and know about anything, at least important is to always have them on truth serum. I’m just throwing it out there that there are politician’s who are nutty or dumb enough to actually believe their own words and aren’t always lying.
