Goodnight and Good Luck
This post was originally posted at The New Democrat Plus

If I had to rate Goodnight and Good Luck on a scale of 1-10 with ten being the highest, I would give it a 9-9.5. And I saw the movie again a couple of nights ago in preparation for this blog. The only reason I wouldn’t give it a ten, is because it was a ninety-minute movie about one of the most important times during the Cold War between America and Russia and their allies on both sides. This movie should’ve been at least two-hours if not three and they would’ve been able to cover so many more aspects about the McCarthyism in the 1950s.

If you are familiar with the 1950s in America and the so-called red scare about communism and Communists in America, then you are also familiar with U.S. Senator Joe McCarthy and the Army McCarthy hearings that supposedly investigated supposed Communists inside of the U.S. Government. A complete fishing trip inside of an empty bathtub, because Chairman McCarthy and his team didn’t have much if anything to go on. Other than guilt by association. Senator McCarthy saw this as his ticket to the White House after President Dwight Eisenhower.

Edward R. Murrow the anchor and managing editor of CBS News’s See it Now, the CBS nightly newscast before the CBS Evening News, knew what communism was and who were the actual Communists. Because he covered World War II in Europe. And didn’t believe that Americans who weren’t Communists should be stuck with the label of Communists. And he and Fred Friendly and their team at See it Now, without having the backing of CBS News and the broader CBS network, decided to go after McCarthyism and expose Joe McCarthy for what he was. Which was a political opportunist and a right-wing fascist. Who saw Americans who didn’t look at the world the way he did as Un-American.

Murrow and Friendly expose Joe McCarthy for what he really was by going after him the way any good news organization would. By using the truth against McCarthy. Using his own words and documents against the Senator. And with Murrow doing a nightly editorial after their reporting on the McCarthy hearings about dangerous fascism and guilt by association is. And George Clooney who plays Fred Friendly and David Strathairn who plays Ed Murrow, do a great job of showing who the real Friendly and Murrow and the See it Now crew take down Senator Joe McCarthy.

The Newsroom
This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on WordPress

Similar to yesterday, this sounds like a hard news report what is important, get the facts, report and talk intelligently, coming from the women leading the meeting. Versus young Millennial’s who just got out of college 5-10 years ago who get most of their news, if you want to call it that from MSNBC, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. And watch a hell of a lot of tabloid and celebrity news and realty TV and follow those things online. And what they are saying is that, “we should report and cover what will draw the most ratings”. Meaning what they are interested in. And when it comes to political news, get the most outrageous and tabloid looking news stories possible from the loudest voices.

This sounded to me at least like a debate between 60 Minutes or Frontline, versus Hard Copy or Access Hollywood, or whatever the so-called hot tabloid news show is today. Sounds like the hard news people are in charge and the tabloid folks either have to go on the ride or get off the bus. Apparently this so-called news show started off as tabloid and technology oriented and moved to hard news, because their news anchor was falling asleep at the wheel and they got a real news producer. Meaning a producer who produces real news. Hard news that is important for the country know, including politics.

Cable News
This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on WordPress

That whole scene sounded like two hard news veterans like Peter Jennings, for all you kids out there, he anchored ABC’s World News before he died ten-years ago, or Tom Brokaw, former anchor of NBC’s Nightly News, versus some young guy or dude, however you want to put it, who graduated college lets say five-years ago who is perfectly qualified and talented to be doing tabloid news or TV writing or producing or something, like working at Hard Copy or something, if that show is still on there. But doesn’t want to be seen as purely a tabloid worker and wants something serious and substantial on his resume or something.

So the young kid, who should be working full-time in tabloid news, or as writer or producer in Hollywood, gets a break at a real hard news cable news show with his tabloid background and has this idea that he can do both at the same time. You know, good luck with that when you’re working for two people, the anchor and executive producer who are only interested in hard news. And could care less about Casey Anthony, Kim Kardashian, or Paris Hilton, or the latest stupid comments that Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann gave. That would be tabloid political stories in Sarah’s and Michelle’s cases.

The numbers guy, is about exactly that. How the show is doing and who is watching it and how to bring in more people. What stories and topics will bring in the most ratings. And generally speaking since we live in a country of young assholes who see tabloid news as crucially important and don’t think they can live without it and freak out when they miss anything about their favorite celebrities, that is what we get a lot of. The news people male or female, are interested in, well news, in case you were wondering and want ratings too so they can stay on air. But want to cover stories and do them well and appeal to a lot of intelligent viewers, that actually give a damn about important news in this country that actually personally and financially affects them.

So that is what you see in this scene. Two news people, versus the numbers guy, the guy who is simply in drawing the most ratings possible. Versus the news people who simply want to produce the best news show possible that is profitable and allows for them to do the best show that they can. But aren’t simply about the ratings and the money, because they are journalists first. And I just wish we had more real news people on cable right now, because we need more real news. The people who are simply into the tabloid stories will always have those sources to find what they are looking for anyway.

This is my first satire about voter id and that is because this is a very serious issue. Because we are literally talking about perhaps the most anti-democratic pieces of legislation that America has ever seen at least going back to the 1960s and 70s. It is not a solution looking for a problem, it is bad policy without a problem to fix at all. To put it frankly, it is about preventing loyal Democrats from voting. People who wouldn’t need id’s for anything, like senior citizens and college students, at least not state-issued id’s.

Neoconservatives, because that is exactly what they are and I’m with the Jeff Daniels character on this one, when they won back a bunch of state legislatures and governorships in 2010, especially in big traditional Democratic states like Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, discovered they enjoyed power. Actually they love power, they loved power as much as Jim Morrison loved alcohol or John Candy loved food. And also discovered that if they put their policies and laws through, people in those states, especially big Democratic states would vote them out and they would be out of power, the thing they love.

So how do you hold onto power without winning reelection? You stop the opposition from voting, you after their traditional base and make it difficult for them to vote. A better term for voter id would be the Democratic Voter Prevention Act or DVPA and then name the state that currently has a Tea Party government instead of Republican government. To be a Republican, I think you actually have to believe in republicanism. That makes sense to me at least. “I know how we’ll win and get reelected! We’ll stop the other sides’ core base from voting! Gee that’s the ticket!” Unfortunately for them, this is unconstitutional and has been thrown out in states like Pennsylvania.

Rick SantorumSource: This piece was originally posted at The New Democrat Plus

Rick Santorum and the broader Neoconservative-Right and Christian-Right are exactly why Americans are seen as stupid. We get stereotyped as people who think like them, as people who not only have warped religious and moral beliefs, but people who want to not only enforce those warped values on the rest of the country and do it through law. Will McAvoy asked a rhetorical question with an obvious answer to it. “How does someone’s same-sex marriage a threat to someone else’s straight marriage or make it less valuable?” The obvious answer is that it doesn’t.

The Christian-Right at least some of their militant members who go out of their way to put down people who don’t live like them, are simply assholes. Now are simply stupid and ignorant and know any better, or are they just rude bastards? I’m not a mind-reader, so I can’t tell you, but they have a bad habit of saying things about people and different communities that are flat false and as a result have a bad habit of speaking out of their ass. The definition of an asshole, someone who speaks out of their ass. Speaks to things they aren’t knowledgeable about as if they know what they are talking about.

Christian-Conservatives have the absolute constitutional right to look down upon people who are not like them and do not look at the world like they do. Gays case in point, but they don’t have a right constitutional or otherwise to harass people they do not like or even hate. And certainly don’t have a right to force their beliefs on the rest of the country, by law or otherwise. We live in a liberal democracy, as much as the Far-Right hates that and is against that. We all have the right to live our own lives and believe what we believe. Not try to dictate how others should live and what they should believe.

I’m going to start this post off with a few expressions that may sound cheesy today, but explain what I’m getting at perfectly. “Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. And the other one being, “every good reporters gets at least two sources on their story before they run with it”. The second is definitely true, but since we are now in a twenty-four hour news cycle with the first to report on something considered to be the winner in the Super Bowl of ratings war, even if they are inaccurate with their reporting, that rule is not followed very much anymore. It’s about being first and figuring out what actually happened later.

My point is about Fox News and her’s another expression, take everything that Fox News reports, especially about Democrats, people on the Left or even Republicans and people on the Right that the Tea Party and Far-Right views as RINOS or fake Republicans with at least a jar of salt. Forget about the grain of salt cliché, I mean seriously what can you do with a grain of salt anyway, it probably won’t even make you thirsty. Fox News in name only and they are only there as the official mouthpiece for the Tea Party and Far-Right in America. And perhaps the only cable network that take Representative Michelle Bachmann seriously and doesn’t see her as an escaped mental patient.

Everything you saw in this video actually happened. The Newsroom just took from what Fox News and other right-wing media sources reported on air. They just used their own lips, mouths and pieces against them. What’s the quickest way to defeat your opponent in an election or any other political battle? Use their own words against them, but make sure you inform people who are awake, competent and listening to you. Anytime Fox News claims to report something and you’re someone who is actually interested in news, well if that’s the case you’re probably not watching Fox News, but if you are, check at least three or four real news sources to make sure what FNC is reporting is actually accurate.

The Newsroom
This post was originally posted at The New Democrat on WordPress

Keep in mind, I’m not a regular viewer of The Newsroom. Actually, all I’ve seen from this show, is what I’ve seen from YouTube. (Thank God for YouTube) But what I took from this video, is pre-hard news, The Newsroom was basically a soft news, tabloid news show similar to Hard Copy and unfortunately a lot of what CNN is doing now. “This is what is hot in technology. This is who this celebrity is seeing now and thinks about this. This is what this celebrity is now in jail for and wore to that awards show”.

The Piers Morgan show is now off the air (maybe there is a God after all) and that is what it was about until Piers decided he was going to compete with MSNBC and all ten of their viewers and compete for viewers on the Far-Left in America and use their rhetoric and speak for their issues and policies. But that show didn’t do well under the soft-talk format or the so-called hard-talk and hardball politics format. The show died like someone being dropped from a plane a thousand feet in the air with a parachute that doesn’t open and work.

And what was going in with The Newsroom was nothing serious really. All that happened was the driver of the show so to speak the anchor was falling asleep at the wheel talking about technology and tabloid news all the time. And they got a real producer with a real news background played by Sam Waterston, Charlie What’s His Name, (I don’t think that’s his real last name) and they changed the format and the Will McAvoy character played by Jeff Daniels became a real news anchor of a real news show. And the rest is history.
